West Chester has recently announced the addition of a K9 Unit to the borough’s police force, writes Justin Heinze for Patch.
It’s been 40 years since the police department hired a four-legged friend, but that all changed with the force’s newest member, Odin.
“We are thrilled to welcome K9 Odin to our team,” said Chief of Police Joshua Lee. “His training and abilities will be invaluable in our ongoing commitment to keeping West Chester a safe and secure place for everyone.”
Odin is a two-year-old German Shepherd who was born in the Czech Republic. He’s been training for his new job his whole life, namely in the field of chiefly routine patrol and narcotics detection. His new handler is Samantha Long, who trained with Odin at the Iron Rose K9 Center in Boiling Springs, Pa.
“Partnered with Officer Long, we are confident that K9 Odin will make a significant impact in our patrol operations,” Lee said.
As Odin is a part of the West Chester Police Department, his healthcare will be overseen by East Bradford Veterinary Hospital.
