The Washington

By Alexandra Proko

If you’re from the Brandywine Valley, you know that General Washington loved himself a tavern and slept in many an inn. If he had a Little Black Book of favorite places to rest his head, we’d bet that The Washington at Historic Yellow Springs would make the list.

To get married in Chester County almost always indicates that loved ones in attendance will experience a story in a space that is rich with history. If you’re considering this hidden gem, tucked away off of Route 113 in Chester Springs, that cup runneth over.

At one time, during the American Revolution, General Washington commissioned a hospital to be built on the property – hence, his visit. The infamous stone backdrop in many a wedding photo from couples who have celebrated their nuptials here took advantage of the access they had to these ruins.

Yes, you can touch historical remnants of the American Revolution. We’ll take that a step further, to let you know that you can host your ceremony inside of them too. You’re welcome.

Not only is Historic Yellow Springs a non-profit with a mission steeped in community, culture and the arts, but the historic integrity of such a rich history remains intact throughout the event venue and its grounds.

To step foot on its grounds is to travel back in time, and that is an experience that sets The Washington apart from most other destinations.

On that note, let’s talk about the grounds for a moment. Booked couples have the option of hosting their ceremony in the courtyard – cocktail hour can also be held here or in the original tavern, the Brick Room – , atop the tree-lined hill or in the stone ruins. In case of inclement weather or an off-season wedding, couples can take advantage of a beautifully restored back up plan.

While many historic venues are more compact and short on space, The Washington defies the odds. With over 2000 square feet in The Washington’s ballroom alone, you can seat 150 guests for dinner and still have plenty of room to dance – and no, you don’t need to rent a special dance floor.

In the past couple of months, The Washington at Historic Yellow Springs was awarded with The Knot’s Best of Weddings 2019 and WeddingWire’s Couple’s Choice Award 2019. It’s no surprise.

Among all of its other amenities, rental includes use of the grounds and a five hour event complete with three hours of prep in the stunning suite(s). Yes, spaces for both of you to get ready with your respective bridal party members. Venue fees range between $2,000-$3,750.

Tours are by appointment only, and can be scheduled through Caitlin Burton, 610-827-7414 ext. 15. Be sure to mention this article when you call. If you fall in love with The Washington, be sure to bring your family and friends out to one of their upcoming winter Open Houses on March 9 or March 30. Registration is required.
