Dan Williams, the first African-American Democrat to serve Chester County as State Representative for Pennsylvania’s 74th District, is paving the way for those who thought they would never get a seat at a table, writes Jhas Williams-Wood for Rantt Media.

But Williams, a Parkesburg resident and the Senior Pastor of New Life in Christ Fellowship Church in Coatesville, had to overcome many obstacles on the way.

Growing up in West Philadelphia, Williams struggled through poverty in a city littered with gang violence and crime. During high school, his guidance counselor told him he would be better off joining the Army than attempt to get into college.

But that did not deter Williams, who now holds a Doctorate in Theology.

His election to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives was also important to many African-Americans in his district and beyond.

According to his daughter, Williams-Wood, “it mattered to have him seated at the table with the people who decide my living conditions, my taxes, my insurance costs.”
