Thanks to his public service and volunteering, former Kennett Square mayor Leon Spencer Jr. has become an inspiration to many in the borough and beyond, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Spencer was recently recognized by the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year, an honor he was quick to share with everyone around him.

“Imagine a conductor waving his arms, and there are no singers,” he said. “It just doesn’t work. I’m grateful for the honor, but it’s a shared honor. I share it with all of you.”

Spencer served as mayor for 11 years until 2010 and was president of the Kennett Square Borough Council until 2015. Today, he serves as the Chester County School Authority chairman, vice chairman of the board for the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, and a member of Cheyney University’s Council of Trustees. But these are just some of his current appointments.

He says he gives so much of his time due to his genuine love of people.

“My love of people is spiritually based,” he said. “I respect our differences. We’re all made in the same image.”
