The Bishop Shanahan High School STEM team has won first place at the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Regional Competition for the second year in a row, according to a report from the Daily Local News.

The competition was at the Chester County Intermediate Unit last week. The teams were tasked with developing communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills to address the needs of Pennsylvanians.Valentine's Day Banners

Each regional team chose a real-world problem and performed research. They then designed, built, and presented a device to improve the quality of life for Pennsylvania citizens.

The winning entry from Bishop Shanahan was the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Lifesaving Assistant. This portable device detects and monitors pressure and compression rates to help when performing CPR.

The team was assisted by CTDI (Communications Test Design, Inc.) and Suzanne Vietri, a health educator and certified CPR instructor.

To prepare for the statewide competition in May, the Bishop Shanahan team will continue developing the CRLA using more research and feedback from community partners and the CCIU’s panel of judges.
