Ashlyn, left, and Mariel DiNatale flank their grandfather, Norm Strehle.

Ashlyn and Mariel DiNatale, both students at Unionville High School, followed in their grandfather’s footsteps by participating in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day, writes Jim Memmott for the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat & Chronicle.

Ashlyn, 16, and Mariel, 14, are members of the Cavalcade of Bands Honor Band that has musicians from 19 different high schools in southeastern Pennsylvania. Ashlyn plays baritone and Mariel the trombone, like her grandfather, Norm Strehle.

The resident of Greece, N.Y., remembers his marching experience fondly and still has the newspaper articles from that day 50 years ago.

“It’s an exciting experience to see your own granddaughters enjoy and participate in the same event I did 50 years ago,” said Strehle.
