Downingtown West graduate Zack Steffen, the star goalkeeper of Columbus Crew SC of Major League Soccer, is close to finalizing a multimillion-dollar transfer deal with Manchester City of the English Premier League, writes Matthew Ralph for Brotherly Game.

The rumored $9 million transfer fee would be the largest ever for a Crew player.

Steffen, 23, was recently named the 2018 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. In January, he made his debut for the U.S. Men’s National Team.

During the 2018 regular season with the Crew, Steffen had a 1.28 GAA (goals against average) with a 64.1 save percentage. He anchored a defense that conceded only 45 goals, placing it in the top third of the league. He was also third in the league with 10 shutouts despite missing five games.

A formal announcement about Steffen can’t be made until Jan. 1, when the international transfer window opens.
