Penn State Great Valley recently completed a $1.9 million renovation to the ground floor of its Main Building to create the Knowledge Commons shared learning space, according to a report from Penn State News.

The 9,000-square-foot area has been transformed from a library into a lively place where eating, drinking, and talking is encouraged.

The space still features the library’s circulation desk and a limited onsite collection. However, it also now includes group study rooms, a micro-market, 3D printing lab, One Button Studio, media editing room, a gaming room, and fitness studio. Also, the writing center and instructional design office are now housed there.

The Knowledge Commons aims to foster collaboration among students, faculty, and staff. It features comfortable furniture with height-adjustable tables and chairs, and monitors can project from any device, including mobile phones. Many rooms also have glass walls, giving an open, modern feel.

“We wanted to create a destination for students to work and play in a stimulating environment,” said Maria Zuccato, director of finance and business for the campus.
