NFL Player from West Chester Wears Special Cleats to Raise Awareness of Pediatric Cancer
West Chester native Carl Nassib, a defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, donned a special pair of cleats for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers to support Penn State’s THON, writes Mikey Mandarino for Onward State.
Nassib, a Malvern Prep grad who played at Penn State, traded in his usual footwear for a pair of cleats that prominently displayed the logos of THON and the Nittany Lions.
THON is a student-run philanthropy that aims to better the lives of children and families who have been impacted by childhood cancer.
The NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative gave players the opportunity to support any charity or cause they chose during Week 13 of the season. After the games, the specially-designed cleats were auctioned off, with all of the proceeds donated to a charity or cause designated by each player.
The NFL usually does not allow its players to wear cleats with special designs, but an exception was made for Week 13 for the initiative.
The Buccaneers won their game, 24-17, against the Panthers. Nassib has 5.5 sacks through 12 games this season.
