Demolition of the Mosteller Building at one of the busiest intersections in West Chester, at West Gay and North Church streets, finally began on Friday, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Eli Kahn of E. Kahn Development is planning to construct a 44,000-square-foot mixed use structure on the site. The building will have at least one restaurant at ground level with several floors of offices above.

“I’m so excited to get that building down,” said Kahn, a regular at municipal meetings for several years.

He said the demolition will last around three months, with construction of the new building finished before the end of next year. He said that the impact on motorists would be minimal.

Borough Council President Diane LeBol said the Mosteller Department Store was an important anchor in West Chester for a number of years. But once it was repurposed for county offices, it became an eyesore.

“So, although it’s very sad to see that building coming down, I’m looking forward to a huge improvement at that corner, now that Mr. Kahn’s project is finally under way,” she said.
