Richard Yankowitz, a West Chester University graduate and longtime basketball coach at Murrell Dobbins Tech, has been honored with the North Philadelphia high school’s 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award, according to a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Dobbins has long recognized the value, dedication, and unwavering commitment coach Richard ‘Yank’ Yankowitz has brought to the athletic program of Dobbins,” the school said.

Yankowitz, who retired 13 years ago, was honored on Saturday at the Murrell Dobbins Tech’s 80th anniversary celebration.

Even in retirement, Yankowitz is still active in local sports. He volunteers with track programs throughout Philadelphia, scouts for a number of local teams, and keeps tabs on the action at Dobbins.

A member of the WCU Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Yankowitz compiled a 486-269 record during his 34 seasons as coach at Dobbins. In 1985, he guided the team to a 28-2 record and the Public League championship.

During his time at Dobbins, Yankowitz also coached baseball for 10 seasons, and coached cross-country, track, and soccer.
