Malvern resident Leslie Schillat ensured her debut at the North American League (NAL) National Finals was a memorable one by emerging victorious in the Adult Jumper Final, according to a report by TAPInto.net.

The NAL is a series of shows that offer events for hunters and jumpers.

The riders spent months earning points to qualify for the finals, held recently at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg.

Schillat reached the jump-off along with seven other entrants by riding fault-free over the first-round course. She then mastered the final course on her 12-year-old Hanoverian mare, finishing in first place and securing the $10,000 prize.

“This is my first time at this show, so we were both nervous,” said Schillat. “I expected none of this. I thought, if I have a nice round I’ll be happy with it and see what happens after that. This is beyond what was expected.”

She also praised her mare, which does her best when her rider is nervous.

“She just takes care of me,” said Schillat.
