Malvern Prep quarterback Drew Gunther turned down a number of scholarship offers to commit to Virginia Tech as a preferred walk-on, writes Evan Watkins for 247Sports.com.

“Ever since I was a kid, my goal was to play college football,” Gunther tweeted. “I am blessed to be able to achieve that goal at Virginia Tech.”

Virginia Tech was the first college the 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback visited during his sophomore year, and he has been back every year since.

“I really like the coaching staff and their track record with player development,” he said.

Gunther also said that the offensive scheme is a great fit for him, as it is similar to Malvern Prep’s.

And while Virginia Tech’s offer did not have a scholarship attached to it – like those from Brown, Fordham, VMI, Albany, and Georgetown – Gunther believes that will change with time.

“I am willing to bet on myself and earn a scholarship when I get there,” he said.
