Katie Muth, who is attempting to unseat the Republican incumbent in the 44th State Senate District covering Philadelphia’s western suburbs, has won significant support nationally from the left, but faces resistance at home from Pennsylvania Democrats, writes Liz Essley Whyte for The Center for Public Integrity.

Muth, whose campaign is headquartered in Exton, is part of the left’s new surge of women candidates following the 2016 election. Her campaign has received major financial support from Flippable, a group in New York committed to electing Democrats.

Also, volunteers from as far as Hawaii have sent out more than 16,000 handwritten postcards to voters in Muth’s district.

“Thank God these national organizations picked us up,” said Muth. “We would be lost without them.”

She believes the established political apparatus in Pennsylvania is reluctant to embrace her candidacy. According to Muth, the mostly male leadership of the state’s Democratic Party is more focused on protecting its current lineup than expanding it.
