Golden Rams Field Hockey

At 10-1, West Chester University’s field hockey team is ranked No. 1 in NCAA’s Division II. After a loss to Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass., to open the season, the Golden Rams have won 10 straight games.

Coach Amy Cohen says her staff expected this group to perform at a high level this season.

“We knew what we had,” Cohen said. “I’m not sure everyone else maybe knew, but we certainly did expect this from our group this year.”

Junior Caitlin Kelly and sophomore Emma Velez – both Coatesville natives and Bishop Shanahan High School graduates – have each scored four goals this season.

“Their passing is pretty crisp, goal scoring is great, defense is good,” Cohen said of her team. “It’s just now putting 70 full minutes together to see if this group can take themselves from being great to really something special.”

Geno Auriemma

ESPN’s new documentary series, “Basketball: A Love Story,” includes a 25-minute segment on the relationship between coaching legends Pat Summitt and Geno Auriemma, who is a WCU graduate, and the Tennessee-Connecticut rivalry in women’s college basketball, according to a report in the Hartford Courant.

According to ESPN, the series explores “the complex nature of love as it relates to the game and opens the window to insights and perspectives about race, politics, media, art, business, style, and entertainment.”

The segment – entitled “Pat vs. Geno” – highlights Auriemma’s early years at UConn and how the rivalry with Tennessee came to be.
