Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long has donated a quarter of his salary to his personal foundation that helps the less fortunate, writes John Duffley for FanBuzz.com.

The Chris Long Foundation supports a number of worthy causes, including helping the homeless, assisting former military after their service ends, and supplying basic items to help disadvantaged youth.

The foundation’s latest step is to partner with the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey for Philadelphia’s Read By 4th campaign. Together, they are launching the “First Quarter for Literacy” drive. This aims to give books to young people while encouraging parents to get their kids to read more.

Long has also announced that he will match any donations made by players from any of the teams they play this season, up to a total of $25,000.

“We are excited to continue our commitment to education this year through the ‘First Quarter for Literacy’ drive,” said Long. “We are partnering with United Way and Read By 4th, not only to support their incredible efforts to get kids reading on grade level but also to amplify the message about the importance of early childhood literacy.”
