Chester Springs resident Mary Kane, 85, was charged $4,750 by a matchmaking service that she said provided her with just one option, writes Christian Hetrick for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kane, who felt lonely after her husband died in May, contacted Philadelphia Singles to look for a companion. The agency told her it had wonderful men to match her with if she paid $7,000.

Kane said she was shocked by the price, but once that amount was lowered to $4,750, she said she felt pressured into signing the contract.

“They said: ‘If you walk out of here, that’s it. You can’t have second thoughts and come back and sign up,'” said Kane. “I think they’re just taking advantage of people like me.”

Instead of the seven introductions guaranteed by her contract, which has a no-refund policy, Kane was offered just one. The man she was offered did not have college education, despite her specifying she was looking for a highly educated man.

According to the contract, preferences for a partner are only “used as a guidance” for introductions.

After inquiries made by the media, the owner of the matchmaking service said he would provide a full refund to Kane.
