Margaret Egan, the principal at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School in West Chester, will be honored by the White House and the U.S. Secretary of Education with the prestigious Terrel H. Bell Award, writes Alicia Nieves for CBS Philly.

Egan’s school also received the National Blue Ribbon.

An educator in Chester County for almost 50 years, Egan is one of only 11 school leaders nationwide receiving the award this year.

“I actually cried when I found out we were Blue Ribbon, and then to hear this, it’s just overwhelming,” she said.

Her staff nominated her for the award without her knowledge.

“The team wrote about what an outstanding leader she is,” said Barbara Downing, advancement director at the school.

Egan will travel to Washington, D.C., on Nov. 7 to receive the award. She is looking forward to both meeting the Secretary of Education and the 10 other recipients. She’s also hoping to learn about their best practices and to bring them back to Chester County.
