West Chester Family Forms Unlikely Bond Through Generous Act Halfway Around the World

The Harootunian family.

A family from West Chester made its summer vacation even more unforgettable by helping strangers in need of medical equipment for cerebral palsy, writes Stephanie Stahl for CBS Philly.

Anna Harootunian, 14, has cerebral palsy and uses a walker to get around. While on a cruise this summer, her family bonded with a waiter from the Philippines whose son also has cerebral palsy.

“For him to be able to see Anna use the walker, he said they don’t have anything like that in the Philippines,” said Anna’s mother, Susan. “I can’t imagine not being able to help your child.”

Anna immediately wanted to help the boy. So, at the end of the cruise, the family gave their new friend Anna’s walker and wheelchair to take home to his son.

“It feels great,” said Anna. “I feel like he’s going to be on the right track to getting the resources he needs.”

The two families stay in touch. When the Harootunians found out the boy had never seen a specialist or had any treatment, they started a GoFundMe page for him.
