A viral video featuring Philadelphians on their sometimes worst behavior is shining a spotlight on the opening theme for Action News, writes Mark Byrnes for CityLab.

Called “Move Closer to Your World,” the music brings together crashes, fights, and fires in the video. In the process, it also creates nostalgia for true fans of broadcast journalism in the region.

The theme, written by Al Ham, has pumped up viewers for 6ABC Action News since the 1970s, and has become a part of Philadelphia’s identity.

The song has been sampled by The Roots, the celebrated hip-hop group from Philadelphia, both in concert and on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where The Roots are the house band.

Ham optioned the song to news affiliates across the country and all around the world.

Other versions of his song have also been released over the years, including an extended version where the Hillside Singers, a group featuring Ham’s wife and daughter, performed the lyrics.
