Local Teacher at Forefront of Grassroots Movement in 11th Congressional District

Annie Weaver, an elementary school teacher in Chester County, is at the forefront of grassroots efforts to blend electoral politics and is mobilizing her community to help Jess King win the congressional race for the 11th District, writes Ryan Grim for The Intercept.

Weaver, who lives in Lancaster County, was prompted into action by the 2016 presidential election, which she said left her in a stupor.

“I remember coming to work that day, and I stopped at the Wawa and I didn’t even make eye contact with people, because I couldn’t believe this was the world that we lived in,” she said.

So she made a New Year’s resolution to do whatever she could to make the next election different.

She got involved with the Lancaster Stands Up movement, which was created after the election. The movement organized one of the largest protests in Lancaster City history with 2,000 people gathering to protest the Muslim ban.

After a string of other successful events, Weaver focused her attention on King’s innovative campaign for the House.
