The Boyer Candy Company in Altoona has saved the Clark Bar from extinction following Necco’s bankruptcy and is bringing the iconic candy bar back home to Pennsylvania, according to a report from The Associated Press.

The Clark Bar was created in 1917 in Pittsburgh by Irish immigrant D.L. Clark, and was wildly popular among soldiers during World War I. In 1955, the Clark family sold the business, and ownership changed many times over the years. It was eventually purchased by Necco in Massachusetts in the 1990s.

But the Clark Bar’s fate was thrown into question in April, when Necco declared bankruptcy. The company was purchased by Round Hill Investments, which then sold the brand.

“We’re really excited,” said Boyer owner Anthony Forgione. “This is an iconic Pennsylvania candy.”

Now, Boyer has the rights and recipes, along with the manufacturing equipment purchased from an undisclosed seller. According to Forgione, it will take approximately six months to start production.

“We saw how upset people were,” he said. “No candy bar should go out of production on its 101st birthday.”
