Tuesdays with Michael: Writing as a Means to Crystallize Your Thoughts

Last week, I discussed crystallized thinking – the solidification of the ideas running through your mind – and how it’s essential to your success, both personally and professionally.

Paul J. Meyer, the late author and leadership guru, said it best: “Writing crystallizes thought and thought motivates action.” When we write down our thoughts – not type them, but actually hand-write them – we are visually concentrating on what we are writing. The act of writing fixates on paper the stream of consciousness flowing down the river of reality. Writing slows us down.

This visual attachment helps us to better organize and understand our thoughts. Writing your thoughts allows your thought process to deepen.

First, we brainstorm. We write down everything; we write and write more. The thoughts and ideas will flow. Then, we decipher what we have written.

Capture your thoughts in writing and watch your plan expand into reality and take shape. Getting our ideas down on paper helps us to articulate and define what we really want. When you write a thought on a piece of paper your attention is fully focused on that thought.

Our brain is designed to focus on one thought at a time. Writing on paper gets clarity in your brain at the same time. We begin to organize our thoughts into goals, strategies, plans, and action steps. What we once thought was impossible now does not seem all that farfetched.

Napoleon Hill, the renowned self-help author, said: “First comes thought; the organization of that thought into ideas and plans; the transformation of those plans into reality.”

The question is how much thinking and writing time do you set aside each day?

Start today! I challenge you to write down one thing you want to accomplish today and notice how crystallized thinking leads to success.

Write down all the details: what, why, how, when, and where. Visualize what doing this will look like and what the result will feel like. You are much more likely to achieve your goals and dreams if you write them down.

Next week, I will discuss clarity and how the lack of it is the No. 1 thing that wastes our time.
