Tensions are running high over an audit of the K-9 unit operated by the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, writes Vinny Vella for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Controller Margaret Reif issued a subpoena earlier this month to Sheriff Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh to examine the finances of the K-9 unit, which is covered mostly by grants and donations.

Welsh said she has “grave concerns” about the audit’s objectivity, but her office is cooperating fully.

“I think it’s unfortunate that this was not handled differently,” she said.

The probe has brought accusations of partisan motivation, as Reif is a Democrat and Welsh is a Republican.

Reif responded by saying she had found multiple issues that need addressing.
