Peter and Terri Silvester, the owners of Grist Mill Farm Alpacas in Glenmoore, found their true calling a decade ago in alpaca farming, writes Lisa Dukart for Main Line Today.

The pair discovered the business while attending a match at the Brandywine Polo Club, where they noticed a few alpacas.

“We saw these animals, and we were absolutely intrigued by them,” Peter said.

The Silvesters had just purchased the site of a former grist and lumber mill to build a home. But before taking the plunge into alpaca farming, they visited several alpaca farms to get some ideas.

“We had no background in farming or agriculture or anything else, but neither of us are afraid to work hard or get our hands dirty,” said Peter.

Their herd started out with two pregnant alpacas, and has now grown to fifteen.

In a year, they produce around 30,000 yards of fiber from 10 of their alpacas. Terri sends it to a mill to be turned into yarn.
