The Malvern Fire Company has canceled its annual pig roast after several calls and threats of protests were received over the animal being cooked and served, writes Vinny Vella for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The sixth annual fundraiser was set for Saturday, Aug. 4. Now, according to Fire Chief Chris Gastwirth, other options will be discussed at a closed-door meeting.

Malvern’s Deputy Fire Chief, Jim Rapp, posted on Facebook that one of the replacement options is “a movie night along with food trucks at the Paoli Memorial Grounds in the next few months.”

The pig roast was first held in 2013 as a fundraising opportunity for the volunteer company.

“I understand that not everyone is going to like a pig on a spit, but don’t go or eat something else,” wrote Carla Zambelli Mudry on her blog, Chester County Ramblings. “I think it’s wrong to shut down a community event, especially for a fire company that doesn’t have a big budget and needs the community’s support.”
