In Chester County, the legal profession seems to run in families, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Stan Lieberman, 85, a lawyer for 53 years, works in Exton. His practice centers on estate planning, probate, and real estate, and he has taught classes on real estate law.

His son, Marc Lieberman, specializes in criminal defense law from his Darlington Street office in West Chester, a short walk from the Chester County Justice Center.

“He never pushed me to do the law. If you are smart enough to be a lawyer, you’re smart enough to do something else,” Marc said his father used to tell him. “If you want to go to law school, that’s fine.”

Like his father, Marc says he enjoys helping people.

The Hon. James MacElree, a retired Common Pleas Judge, comes from a long line of law school graduates. His great-grandfather was Chester County District Attorney, his grandfather was a judge, and his wife, uncle, and aunt are all lawyers.

MacElree worked as a lawyer for 18 months, as an assistant district attorney for nine years, as district attorney for 10 years, and as a judge for 25 years.

“I was always interested in (the law),” MacElree said. “I enjoyed law school very much.”
