Vanguard Adds to Portfolio with Data-Tower, Construction-Timber Stocks

By

Vanguard has purchased more than $2.2 billion in data-tower stocks and $1.2 billion in construction-timber stocks, and plans to buy more shares of the handful of real estate investment trusts (REITs) in each sector, writes Joseph DiStefano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Malvern-based investment firm that manages about $5 trillion in assets is adding those stocks to its real estate index funds for the first time, making it a major owner of:

  • American Tower Corp. and Crown Castle International Corp., which own towers that connect the nation’s smartphones and data centers
  • Weyerhaeuser Co., Rayonier Inc., and PotlachDeltic Corp., which make American construction timber and other wood products

Currently, Vanguard owns at least six percent of most of the companies listed on the S&P 500, and 14 percent or more of the major REIT stocks.

The company’s decision to add timber and tower stocks to its holdings follows an earlier decision to broaden its REIT holdings by including sectors it had previously avoided. Vanguard’s popular REIT index funds have become a dominant owner of commercial REITs.
