The Stroud Water Research Center, retired teacher Vince O’Donnell, and Unionville High School students have joined forces to create 3-D teaching tools that realistically model stream-living critters, writes Diane Huskinson for County Lines Magazine.

The collaboration was the idea of O’Donnell, a retired biology teacher who joined the Avondale-based Stroud Center when Education Director Steve Kerlin expanded its environmental education programs for students and teachers.

With no models readily available, O’Donnell remembered Unionville’s 3-D printers. He reached out to the Tech Ed department and four engineering students volunteered for the project.

Bryan Denmark, a junior in the computer integrated manufacturing class, relished the chance to learn a new skill.

“The objects for this project have complex curves, layers, and parts intersecting at angles the students haven’t dealt with before,” said Denmark.

Once the first mockups were created, they added art students to the mix to give the models real-life colors and textures.

O’Donnell meets with the students to track their progress, review mockups, and give feedback. The entire process is expected to run into next school year.
