Two Chester County women drawn together by the same disorder are the force behind the Race to Beat POTS 5K that takes place annually in Kennett Square, writes Natalie Pompilio for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Three years ago, West Chester resident Taylor Kulp, then 19, and Kennett Square resident Erin Harten, then 17, both felt alone as they struggled with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). The disorder affects automatic functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion.

The women met in 2015 while on a trip in Washington with their mothers to learn how to raise funds for POTS. Their mothers both proposed the same place for the fundraising race, Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square.

“We had so much in common, and we clicked right away,” said Kulp. “It was meant to be.”

In just two years, the Race to Beat POTS 5K has managed to raise more than $50,000. And while the money is phenomenal, the event’s social and emotional benefits are priceless.

“We keep finding more and more people in the community, and the race keeps growing,” said Harten.
