Rex Riccardi, a business started by a pair of Devon Prep students, is selling inexpensive pocket squares and helping to fund cancer research in the process, writes Kennedy Rose for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Ryan Klauder and Christopher Muth established the startup, and last month, they won the annual Saunders Scholars National Competition, where students pitch their businesses.

The two started the company while attending the local chapter of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, which is part of an international network of programs that train students to form their own ventures or nonprofits.

After learning about significant growth in the pocket square industry, the duo saw an opportunity.

“As Ryan and I say, we wanted to hop on the train before it left the station,” said Muth.

The students emphasized that it’s the price of their products that sets them apart from their competition, whose pocket squares are nearly double Rex Riccardi’s $35 per item.

The company also distinguishes itself from other established retailers by donating 10 percent of all sales to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The idea came from Muth, who is a cancer survivor.
