The recent restoration of Longwood Gardens’ Main Fountain Garden has brought a new level of spectacle to the already stunning tourist attraction, writes Mikayla Raymond for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Main Fountain Garden opened in 1931 to rival some of Europe’s most celebrated waterworks. It reopened in May last year, to the delight of visitors, after a $90 million restoration.

Since then, Longwood Gardens has had an influx of visitors above even the most optimistic expectations. More than 600,000 people visited the restored fountain during its opening season.

The fountain was originally built by Pierre S. du Pont, a gifted chemist and engineer and former president of both General Motors and the du Pont family company. He worked on the fountain for nearly a decade, and when it was unveiled, it was an artistic and engineering marvel unlike any other in America.

However, as its mechanical components aged, the Main Fountain Garden had become progressively difficult to maintain. The project successfully restored the fountain to its former glory and added some modern innovations.
