Home of the Sparrow – an Exton-based nonprofit that partners with women facing homelessness to secure housing, achieve long-term stability, and chart new paths for their futures – raised $151,361.94 at its 23rd Annual Gala, held recently at the Phelps School in Malvern.

Gala chair Stacy Sempier, board president Barbara Dougherty, and chief executive officer Michelle Venema welcomed more than 340 guests to the event.

With community support, Home of the Sparrow can help 550 women and children per year. Its programs not only help women in need of a safe and affordable home. They provide rental subsidies, financial skills training, and support with education and employment. All of these services help women gain self-sufficiency and stable housing.

Most importantly, mothers get to build better futures for their children.

For months, volunteers worked in committees – and often on work days – to make the gala possible. The live auction was one of the event’s highlights as bidders were able to secure a trip to a private French Chateau, a trip to Sonoma’s wine country, a trip to Deer Valley in Utah, a lobster dinner at the Desmond, and tickets to see the Philadelphia Eagles play in London’s Wembley Stadium.

Home of the Sparrow applies a holistic approach to help women in need of safe and affordable housing to break the cycle of poverty. As the backbone organization of the Chester County ACEs Coalition, the agency plays an important role in raising the county’s awareness and knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

Most recently, Home of the Sparrow received the Annual Partners Award from the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) for its outstanding work with the Women’s Reentry and Assessment Program (WRAP).

Through its unique partnership with the local criminal justice system, Home of the Sparrow helps to lower recidivism rates by providing justice-involved women with supportive housing services as they reenter the community.
