Andrea Brunsendorf, the director of outdoor landscapes at Longwood Gardens, embarked on a career in horticulture after being inspired by a childhood spent in her grandparents’ garden in the former East Germany, writes Lisa Dukart for Main Line Today.

Her career has spanned the globe, with positions in the U.K., Europe, and South Africa. In London, Brunsendorf was on staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens and later became head gardener at the 800-year-old Inner Temple Garden.

Brunsendorf has returned to Longwood Gardens, where she was part of its internship program in 2001 and 2002.

There will be challenges for Brunsendorf in switching from botanical gardens to display gardens at Longwood.

“The personal challenge will be getting my head and my perspective around the scale of Longwood – going from only three acres to more than 1,000 acres,” she said. “It’s a vast range of different gardens and styles. We’re here to advance them and make sure they’re an enjoyment.”
