Taylor Griffith, a Glen Mills native and Westtown School graduate, examined the lead roles of black women on television for her senior thesis at Princeton, writes Denise Valenti for Princeton University News.

The research is a continuation of Griffith’s junior paper, for which she explored advertising targeted at women. She realized that viewers spend years with characters from television shows, making them more effective than 30-second advertisements.

She began research for her senior thesis as soon as she was done with her junior paper. Griffith focused on six shows, including How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal.

“I started writing down anything and everything that seemed interesting, and it was only then that I started seeing these emerging patterns,” said Griffith, a sociology major who’s also earning a certificate in gender and sexuality studies.

In fact, Griffith found that most of the shows emphasized the women’s interpersonal relationships.

“Plots about their careers are embedded in romance plots,” said Griffith.

For her thesis, Griffith received funding from the university’s Department of Sociology, Department of African American Studies, and Office of Undergraduate Research.
