Musicians from the Curtis Opera Theater will perform at Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center in West Chester on Tuesday, May 22 at 7 PM.

Third in the “Curtis on Tour” concert series, this performance features future stars of opera in a thrilling and diverse program – including arias, duets, and the American songbook – in celebration of the centennial of Curtis alumnus Leonard Bernstein.

Three talented classical music artists are appearing at Uptown! by special arrangement with Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music.

From the Metropolitan Opera to La Scala, Covent Garden to the Vienna Staatsoper, alumni from the Curtis Institute of Music appear around the world. They are in the front rank of soloists, composers, and conductors, and hold principal chairs in every major American orchestra.

Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center is included among international and national venues giving the community the opportunity to hear the highest-caliber young musicians on their path to success.

Ashley Marie Robillard, soprano, Dennis Chmelensky, baritone, and Mikael Eliasen, piano, will perform a number of songs by Leonard Bernstein, including “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere” from West Side Story and “Simple Song” from Mass. They will also perform well-loved arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Magic Flute. The program will be performed without intermission.

To make the performance more accessible to all listeners, Mikael Eliasen will share background anecdotes about the composers’ use of music to communicate engaging stories and emotions.

Each artist’s impressive resume illustrates their talent and commitment to and passion for classical music. The trio performed together last season with Curtis on Tour, singing Hugo Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch.

The singers – Robillard, from Norton, Mass., and Chmelensky, from Berlin – entered Curtis in 2013, each with a merit-based, full-tuition scholarship. Each began singing at a very young age and has performed as soloist in lead roles on local, national, and international stages.

The Danish-born Eliasen received his early training in Copenhagen, Montreal, and Vienna. He has collaborated with leading singers in recital, given master classes, and recorded on numerous labels worldwide.
