After expanding into China with mushrooms, Chester County officials are now looking to tap into the country’s lucrative equestrian industry, writes Kenneth Hilario for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Chester County entered China’s mushroom market last October when the Chester County Economic Development Council broke ground on a multimillion-dollar mushroom facility with Chris Alonzo, owner of Kennett Square-based Pietro Industries.

The county has already established a China Desk, and despite a potential trade war with China, the country represents a huge market for Chester County companies.

These potential opportunities are being considered by Chester County officials, said Michael Grigalonis, the CCEDC’s executive vice president.

“One was a concept of bringing young accomplished equestrians to get world-class training from a Chester County-based trainer,” he said.

This could take advantage of Chester County’s experience with horses and long equestrian season, which includes the Radnor Hunt Races and Devon Horse Show.

Other opportunities being explored by the CCEDC are in the solar and education fields, including student exchange and internship programs between area universities and Chinese companies.
