West Chester University graduate Cindy Timchal became the first lacrosse coach at the Division I level to win 500 games after the Navy women beat Holy Cross, 19-7, last weekend, write Bill Wagner for The Capital Gazette and Adam Zielonka for The Washington Times.

“Five hundred wins are the players; all the losses are the coach,” she joked.

Timchal, who graduated from Haverford High School, arrived in Annapolis after coaching at Northwestern and Maryland. While at the latter, her Terrapins won seven straight national championships from 1995-2001.

Timchal, 63, has been Navy’s only head coach since its program was elevated to varsity status in 2008.

“Growing up in Havertown, we played competitive sports in the elementary schools,” she said. “It was an area that really supported female participation in sports.”
