A new proposal aims to connect Phoenixville to Philadelphia with a passenger rail line, writes Justin Heinze for the Phoenixville Patch.

Developers are proposing two alternatives to achieve this goal. The first option envisions extending the existing Manayunk/Norristown line into Phoenixville. With the infrastructure for this line already largely in place, this is the cheaper, quicker, and more feasible alternative.

The second option would connect Phoenixville to the Paoli Train Station on the Main Line through a longer-term project.

The presentation that focused mainly on the first proposal was recently given to Phoenixville’s Borough Council by Phoenixville developer Manny DeMutis. After the presentation, the council agreed that the borough would sponsor an official feasibility study funded by the DeMutis Group.

According to the organizers, the line would operate in a demonstration phase for the first two years. During this time, trains would only run on weekday peak periods to test its viability. If it proves successful, the service would grow.

In the short term, the project is asking for a 20-person taskforce that will include three borough council members. The detailed proposal will be presented before council on May 8.
