Congressman Ryan Costello Will Not Seek Reelection for 6th Congressional District

Congressman Ryan Costello speaks to members of the Exton Region Chamber of Commerce in October 2015.

Representative Ryan Costello is not planning to seek reelection for Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District in this year’s House election, according to several news accounts including staff report from CW39.

Costello, who is a Republican, was facing a difficult run in his district and now plans to retire at the end of his term.

The decision comes after Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled that the state congressional map was gerrymandered. It has created a replacement map with newly drawn districts in place for the midterm elections.

Costello won his previous two races in 2016 and 2014 with 57% and 56% of the vote respectively. However, the district’s borders at that time were significantly more favorable to Republicans than they are now.

The new sixth district encompasses both Chester County and Reading, a largely Democratic city. This will make it a challenge for Republicans to hold on to.

With Costello’s decision to retire, local tax attorney Greg McCauley is now seeking the Republican nomination. Meanwhile, the lone Democrat in the race for the 6th Congressional District is Air Force veteran, Chrissy Houlahan, a former teacher, business and nonprofit executive.
