Bernard W. Sweeney

The Stroud Water Research Center – an Avondale-based nonprofit that seeks to advance knowledge and stewardship of freshwater systems through global research, education, and watershed restoration – is seeking donations for its Bernard W. Sweeney, Ph.D., Executive Director’s Fund.

Supporting the Fund will honor Sweeney’s long career at the Stroud Center while ensuring the legacy of his dedication to critical, center-wide initiatives.

Sweeney created the Stroud Center’s global presence, as his research and expertise helped it expand its footprint by developing relationships with countries near and far.

Sweeney started at the Stroud Center as a Ph.D. student under Dr. Ruth Patrick in 1973, and was officially hired as a scientist in 1976. He became the second Executive Director in 1988, a role he held for the next 28 years.

Sweeney launched the Stroud Center’s education program for schools and community outreach that currently serves more than 5,000 individuals each year.

He added Watershed Restoration to the Stroud Center’s mission, and his research led him to the conclusion that trees are vitally important for healthy streams.
