The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission has awarded $7.9 million in grant money to local bike and walking trail projects, writes Jason Laughlin for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In addition to the federal money allocated to local projects, the DVRPC has also committed $4 million for future projects to be distributed over the next three years.

Chester County projects received two grants.

The Kennett Area Safer Active Transportation Routes has been awarded $915,000 for bicycle and pedestrian improvements along South Street and Walnut Street. The project will add trail connections to both Pennock Park and Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Township and Kennett Square.

Segment A of the Paoli Pike Trail also received a boost of $483,000 for a side path on the north side of Paoli Pike, between Airport Road and Ellis Lane in East Goshen Township.

Meanwhile, Delaware County has been given funds for one of its projects.

The Pennsy Trail will receive $1,163,000 for an off-road, multi-use trail that will extend the existing Pennsy Trail to Vernon Road. The work will include construction of a bridge over Manoa Road.
