Michelle Legaspi Sanchez, the executive director of the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls, recently visited WHYY to discuss one of the nonprofit’s projects, the Girls Advisory Board, with NewsWorks Tonight host Dave Heller.

She was joined by GAB members Emory Chiappa, a junior at Downingtown STEM Academy, and Bess Neiblum, a junior at Henderson.

The GAB provides high-school girls living in Chester County with the opportunity to learn about the deep and varied needs in their communities while engaging in strategic grant-making.

Each year, the GAB chooses a list of priorities for their grant-making.

“The priority areas are driven by the girls themselves,” said Legaspi Sanchez. “It really reflects what they are seeing in their communities.”

“One of the key components of our board is unity,” said Chiappa. “As girls, we have our own opinions, but are able to come together in the end.”

Through its GAB, the CCFWG aims to educate a new generation of young women about the importance of philanthropy, community service, and the positive difference each girl can make on the lives of others.

“A lot of change can be made by influencing young women and girls,” said Legaspi Sanchez. “Thinking about all the issues we face, it gives hope for future generations by knowing these girls are equipped and empowered to take on those challenges.”
