Hosting an athletic event at the University of Pennsylvania is a large undertaking, one coordinated by Berwyn native Mike Martin, the director of gameday operations at Penn, writes Greg Johnson for Penn Today.

Martin and his team need time to prepare everything, from building concession and merchandise stands to ticketing.

According to Martin, who holds an associate degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Delaware County Community College and bachelor’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management from Temple, timing and communication are key.

“It’s almost like you’re part of the game itself,” he said. “You feel as if you’re an integral part of the success of the event.”

Some organizational aspects are not as easy as others. Penn’s older facilities, such as Franklin Field and the Palestra, offer challenges because of their age. But Martin would not change a thing about them, due to their historic nature.

“I think it’s a cool aspect to have that type of history,” he said.
