The Latino Luncheon of Chester County is helping pave the way for leaders of tomorrow by providing scholarships to Latino students attending West Chester University and Immaculata University, writes John McGuire for AL DÍA News.

Latino Luncheon is a networking group that helps develop professional and personal connections across the county’s Latino community and beyond.

The scholarship idea was born when Idna Corbett, the co-organizer of the group, was an educator at WCU. She was approached by a student who needed a summer class to graduate but could not afford it.

“Come to the Latino Luncheon,” said Corbett. “I’m sure that there will be people there that will help.”

The group raised enough money on the spot, and thus inspired them to start raising funds for $1,500 scholarships for Latino students in need of aid.

The recipients are chosen from candidates suggested by WCU and Immaculata based on their cumulative GPA and financial need. But selecting exactly which students is tough.

“We interviewed about 15 students, and these kids were all exceptional,” co-organizer Leonard J. Rivera said of this year’s candidates. “They almost moved me to tears.”
