Citadel Employee Wins 60-Second Shopping Spree for Charity

Citadel employee Doug Thompson, with glasses, surveys the goods before his 60-second shopping spree for charity.

Doug Thompson, Citadel’s Director of Retail Delivery, was among a handful of lucky shoppers who won a spot in a 60-second shopping spree, writes Jesse Kirsch for ABC7 in Chicago.

However, Thompson wasn’t shopping for himself.

Instead, the items he and his shopping partner Brandon Engle gathered were for the United Way of Lancaster County.

“It makes it more exciting for us because we’re shopping for others that are in need,” said Thompson.

The shopping spree – organized by PSCU, the largest credit union service organization in America, and conducted at Hinda’s warehouse in Chicago’s Brighton Park – gave participants 60 seconds to grab what they could.

In order to strategize, shoppers first had a 30-minute walkthrough of the 2,000-plus items, which included electronics, cooking appliances, toys, and power tools.

Then, during the spree, one team member pushed the cart, while the other picked from the shelves. When the time was up, Thompson’s team was ecstatic.

“We got the must-haves and everything else is just icing on top,” said Engle.

According to PSCU, the average loot per team was around $5,000 in merchandise.
