A shiny blue bike, a vacuum cleaner, plus more than $1,000 worth of toys and clothing are now missing from under the 14-foot-tall Christmas tree at the law offices of Gawthrop Greenwood in downtown West Chester.
And employees are thrilled about it.
“Santa’s elves have definitely arrived,” said attorney Walter Eells, who leads the firm’s Family Law practice. “They’ve picked up the gifts, and are getting ready to deliver them just in time for Christmas to four families in our community.”
Dozens of gifts have surrounded the tree all month, each individually wrapped by Gawthrop Greenwood employees who contributed their personal money, as well as new toys, so they could brighten the holidays for families who sent wish lists through the Chester County Department of Children, Youth, and Families (CYF).

The hunt for the gifts began at 4 AM on the busiest shopping day of the year, when legal assistants Julie Smith and Karen Carter took advantage of Black Friday deals using the money they had been collecting for weeks from the firm’s attorneys and staffers.
“On Christmas morning, four families with 10 kids will have big smiles on their faces,” said Carter.
“That warms our hearts every year as we’re searching for the perfect gifts,” said Smith.
It’s the sixth year that employees of Gawthrop Greenwood have joined together to collect funding for CYF and volunteer their time to shop for gifts. Since the firm’s donations began, Gawthrop Greenwood has given more than $5,000 worth of gifts and monetary donations.
“Through our Family Law practice, we coordinate many services for local families through the Chester County Department of Children, Youth, and Families,” said Eells. “It’s always a pleasure to be able to assist those families throughout the year, but especially during the holidays.”
