Dr. David Shulkin, the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, recently visited the Coatesville VA Medical Center to discuss possible solutions to the opioid crisis, writes Ford Turner for the Reading Eagle.

Shulkin arrived in Coatesville a day after the opioid crisis was declared a national public health emergency by President Donald Trump. He has instructed cabinet members to fan out through the country and talk about the crisis.

“We have to figure out how we together can do something meaningful,” said Shulkin.

Shulkin emphasized that the VA has an advantage over the general public’s system for treating drug addiction, as it does not have to worry about not receiving insurance reimbursements.

“This continuity of care just doesn’t exist” for the general population, he said.

Among the issues discussed was the system developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for chronic pain treatment, which avoids opioid painkillers and could be a model for the general public.
