Home of the Sparrow Helps Struggling Older Women Get Back on Their Feet

Chester County nonprofit Home of the Sparrow provides struggling older women with housing and other resources that help them get back on their feet.

Chester County nonprofit Home of the Sparrow has been a lifeline for older women who are struggling by providing them with a place to stay and other resources to help them get back on their feet, writes Lian Parsons for Generocity.

Many women between the ages of 55 and 62 have trouble accessing critical services, as they are not yet eligible for elderly government services. The program is especially critical in Chester County, where there seems to be a shortage of affordable housing.

The Exton-based nonprofit has pre-senior facilities in West Chester and Coatesville that offer a number of services, including a housing program and financial literacy counseling. The West Chester facility has room for five women, each of whom can stay for up to 18 months. The Coatesville location opened last year and can also house up to five women.

“Home of the Sparrow is a place for older women who have gone through some sort of crisis to catch their breath and be in a safe and peaceful environment,” said Sophie Tentrop, development and communications associate.
