Downingtown East High School graduate Kyle Lauletta, who completed his college football career last weekend as the quarterback at the University of Richmond, has been named one of 25 finalists for the Walter Payton Award.

The Football Championship Subdivision’s equivalent of the Football Bowl Subdivision’s Heisman Trophy, the Walter Payton Award is given annually to the nation’s Offensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Lauletta – whom scouts consider an NFL prospect – finished his senior season, completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 3,737 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also ran for four more scores for the Spiders (6-5).

Lauletta’s father, Joe, was the quarterback at Navy in the mid-1980s. Kyle’s older brother, Trey, played the position at Bucknell, and his younger brother, Bryce, recently concluded his scholastic career as the signal-caller at Downingtown East.

The winner of the Walter Payton Award will be announced at the FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation, scheduled for Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the national championship game.
